The brief
MTArt Agency needed press photographs of two public artworks in Leicester Square for its Art After Dark campaign: Claire Luxton’s giant inflatable artworks and a light piece by Robert Montgomery.
Art that is lit, in a public square, is best photographed while it is still dark and the square is empty. That meant a 4am start.
The shoot
I arrived before dawn, and it rained throughout. The rain turned out to help: the wet ground gave the artworks a reflective quality and a moody, atmospheric backdrop. I worked with the MTArt Agency team on site to make the press shots.
The same morning I photographed Robert Montgomery’s light piece, its words illuminated against the dark sky.
What it shows
PR photography of public art depends on timing and conditions as much as on the camera. Each assignment is a new set of problems to solve, often in the quiet hours before the city wakes up.
This case study is drawn from my own account of the job, which you can read in full on the blog.
